Gord's "screeching in"

You can't come to Newfoundland and not get "screeched in".

Every Newfoundlander knows what a "Screech In" Ceremony is all about. It is the only way that those not lucky enough to be born a Newfoundlander can become as close as possible to being a Newfoundlander, without having to die and be reincarnated as a Newfoundlander. Those who survive the ceremony will be forever known as Honourary Newfoundlanders.

Sister Sarah and I got screeched in in May 2007.  Today it was Gord's turn.

He got it done at Jighouse at the liquor store.

They do the ceremony every day at 1:30pm and 3:30pm.  After the ceremony, their names get put in the official book.

Emily conducted the ceremony.  Here she is explaining it's importance.

There were five getting screeched in, including Gord.

Gord is taking the vow very seriously, isn't he?

You have to kiss a cod or a puffin's butt during the ceremony.

Then when asked if they are a Newfoundlander, they have to reply individually, "Indeed I is me ole cock and may your big jib draw".  Gord is trying to remember what to say.

Done ... close enough!

Then you have to down a shot of Screech, a Newfoundland rum.

Sign the book and then you get your official certificate.

Gord is now an official Newfoundlander.  His grandpa, Sid, who was from Newfoundland would be very proud!

Here's the latest group of Honourary Newfoundlanders along with Emily and the puffin!

It sounds like you're spending most of your time in St. John's, but if you are planning seeing more of the island, I hope you see Twillingate. It's my hometown, and my mother runs a dinner theater there (All Around The Circle).

I can honestly say I've never heard of this ceremony before, but now that I have, I WANT TO DO IT! LOL

This is definitely going on my must-do list :)

Congratulations Gord!
