Book ~ "The Opposite of Maybe" (2014) Maddie Dawson

From Goodreads ~ Jonathan and Rosie have been together so long they finish each other’s sentences - so when he (finally) proposes and asks her to move across the country with him, everyone is happily surprised.

But when things suddenly unravel, Rosie sends Jonathan packing and moves back home with Soapie, the irascible, opinionated grandmother who raised her. Only now she has to figure out how to fire Soapie’s very unsuitable caregiver, a gardener named Tony who lets her drink martinis, smoke, and cheat at Scrabble.

It’s a temporary break, of course - until Rosie realizes she’s accidentally pregnant at 44, completely unequipped for motherhood, and worse, may be falling in love with the sentimental troubled Tony, whose life is even more muddled than hers.

It’s not until Rosie learns the truth about her mother’s tragic story that she wonders if sometimes you have to let go of your fears, trusting that the big-hearted, messy life that awaits you may just be the one you were meant to live.

This story follows Rosie, a 44-year-old woman who has been in a long-term relationship with her boyfriend, Jonathan. When Jonathan proposes and suggests they move to California, Rosie begins to question whether she wants the future they have planned together. The relationship ends and Rosie stays in Connecticut to live with her grandmother, Soapie, who raised her. While adjusting to life at home, Rosie grows closer to Tony, Soapie’s caregiver and a landscape gardener. During this time, she discovers she is unexpectedly pregnant. As Jonathan struggles with the idea of becoming a father and Rosie considers her own desires and responsibilities, she must make decisions about her relationships, her family and her future.

I wasn't all that crazy Rosie or Jonathan. Considering her age, I would have thought that Rosie would be more mature ... she seemed like someone in her late teens/early 20s. Jonathan was just a selfish goof ... but Rosie had put up with his behavior all these years so his actions shouldn't have been much of a surprise. Tony was okay and seemed like a nice fella but he was a pushover with his ex-wife and her new partner. Soapie seemed to be the strongest character and her relationship with George was cute.

I thought this story was okay. I found it a bit draggy and could have been tighter. As a head's up, there is swearing.
