Things You Should Never Say To A Childfree Woman

Huffpost Living Canada recently posted an article entitled 23 Things You Should Never Say To A Childfree Woman.

I've always known I didn't want to have children and took steps when I was 30 to ensure it never happened.  More than 20 years later, I've never regretted my decision.

The article listed 23 things childfree women never ever want to hear you say ... and I've heard most of them over the years:
  1. "What a bad decision."
  2. "Now that I have children, my life has true meaning!"
  3. "You're a crazy cat lady in training."
  4. "You think you're tired? You don't know what tired is."
  5. "You're being selfish."
  6. "You'll change your mind when you meet the right man."
  7. "What are you waiting for?"
  8. "Your mom had you!"
  9. "You're missing out on one of the best things in life."
  10. "Tick tock."
  11. "It's a mom thing."
  12. "That's a shame. You might regret it."
  13. "What's wrong with you?"
  14. "The size of that house and just the two of you? It's a waste of space."
  15. "But you would be such a great mom!"
  16. "Just find a donor and have kids. I'll babysit."
  17. "You think you don't want children, but once you have them you'll change your mind."
  18. "Don't wait too long."
  19. "You'd better hurry up and give your husband a child before he finds someone who will."
  20. "You don't have children, so you won't understand."
  21. "You don't know what real love is."
  22. "Wait until your biological clock kicks in."
  23. "Aren't you worried there'll be no one to look after you when you're old?"

I can't believe you've heard most of these silly insensitive statements! Personally, I'm not just a little bit jealous of the freedom, time and money that you enjoy. I love my kids but I can't wait for them to grow up, including the 20 year-old!

People are so thoughtless. A good friend of mine can't have kids and people who don't know that (not like she really advertises it), say these idiotic things like this to her all the time and she gets so upset. I don't blame her.

It's not the AVERAGE decision to make regarding children, but then, not everyone is the same. My niece has made the same decision you have. I have learned (at my peril) not to challenge her on this. The old saying about walking in another's shoes for a few miles before judging them makes a lot of sense to me now. I hope you can tolerate those of us who think we know best when we really don't.

Ugh, I used to get #4 all the time. So annoying.
