Book ~ "A Girl Called Fred" (2014) Roger Willgoose

From Goodreads ~ "A Girl Called Fred" is the beautifully written tale of Fred, a female Yorkshire terrier, and her first years with a new family. Set in the halcyon days of the seventies, this narrative brings back memories of when the village pub was where good beer and conversation flowed and smoking was allowed inside. Milk was delivered to the doorstep and coal, kept in bunkers, was burnt on open fires where bread and chestnuts could be toasted.

In 1975, at the age of six, Fred joins the Willgoose family and brings love, companionship and joy, mixed with humour and occasional sadness to Jean, Roger and Stephen. To their surprise, Fred betrays her ratting ancestry with most unladylike assaults on various cats, dogs and people who stamp their feet – especially eighteen-stone gentlemen! But her strength of character shows through when she becomes the victim of a road accident which causes great distress to her loving family. Stephen often shows a maturity beyond his years while Roger, with good humour, patience and occasional over-indulgence in the local pub, endures and describes some quite hilarious experiences.

Jean's aunt was looking for a new home for her six-year-old Yorkie.  Jean and her husband, Roger, adopted the dog and Roger renamed her Fred.  These are the stories and adventures of Jean, Roger, Steve (their son), Fred and eventually Charlie (one of Fred's pups), as told by Roger.

I liked the writing style ... it was funny and sarcastic.  The story is set in England so it's a different style than I'm used to and there were terms I wasn't familiar with but I figured it out and found it humorous.  I would recommend this to all dog lovers.

The manuscript for this book was written many years ago.  After Roger died in 2010, his wife found it and had it published.

Señor Frogs, Nassau, Bahamas

Sister Sarah and I spent some time today at Señor Frogs.

Nassau City Tour, Bahamas

Sister Sarah and I did a 2.5 hour bus tour of Nassau today.

Vince was our guide and he took us and another couple around in a van showing us Nassau.

Here's the view of our hotel from Goodman's Bay.

There were four cruise ships in today.

We drove around and Vince let us have some time to explore the Queen's Staircase.

Nassau's most visited attraction is the Queen's Staircase. Climb the 65 steps, carved out of solid limestones by slaves in the late 18th century, between 1793 and 1794. It is reported that slaves were forced to cut through rocks with axes and other sharp hand tools.   This 102 foot staircase was named in honour of the 65 years of Queen's Victoria's reign.

Book ~ "The Milestone Tapes" (2014) Ashley Mackler-Paternostro

From Goodreads ~ The only thing Jenna Chamberland ever wanted in her life was to be a good wife and a good mom. In death, she’ll find that she still wants the same things.

With stage-four breast cancer, a terminal diagnosis and six months to live, Jenna fears what awaits her family after she is gone: her husband, Gabe, will be left to raise their daughter alone, and Mia, only seven years old, will be forced to face a world without her mother.

Ten blank tapes to teach her daughter everything she’ll ever need to know.

Dead before Mia ever really got to know her, Jenna exists now only in pictures and watercolored memories, and Mia finds herself struggling to remember her mother in a way that feels real. But on the ninth anniversary of Jenna’s death, she will return to her daughter through a series of audiocassettes. One tape for each of the milestones of Mia’s life, and with them, a letter explaining that Mia should only listen to the tapes when the time is right.

With the help of her mother’s long-gone voice, Mia may just learn how to embrace the challenges and triumphs of her ever-changing life with humor, grace and a lot of hope.

Jenna and Gabe have everything they've ever wanted ... successful careers, a beautiful house and a daughter named Mia.  Then Jenna discovers she has breast cancer and does all she can to fight it.  It gets to the point where she can continue to fight, be sick all the time only to gain a couple extra months or stop the treatment.  Though she'll likely have less time, she chooses to stop the treatment to spend what quality time she does have with her family.

This is the first half of the book.

The second half of the book takes place nine years later.  Jenna is long gone and Mia is now 15.  Her father gives her ten tapes that Jenna had recorded for Mia and instructs her to obey her mother's wishes and only listen to them when these milestones happened:
    • Your wedding day
    • Becoming a mother
    • College graduation
    • Your first love
    • Your first broken heart
    • Your first time (the sex talk)
    • Your father getting remarried
    • High school graduation
    • Leaving home
    • If you're ever in my position

As some of these milestones happen, we get to "hear" the tapes and Jenna's hopes and advice for the daughter she'll never be able to watch grow up.  The ones we don't "hear" are at the end of the book.

This is the first book I've read by the author and I liked it.  Understandably the first half of the book is much sadder than the second half.  I liked the writing style.  It is written in third perspective, though I think it would have worked better if it had been written in first person perspective with Jenna's voice in the first half and Mia's voice in the second half.  As a head's up, there is some swearing and there's a lot of detail of the effects of Jenna's cancer so I'd recommend it for a mature reader.  The editing could have been tighter ... there were a lot of typos, grammatical errors and wrong words used.

I liked Jenna and Gabe.  They obviously cared about each other and it's too bad their lives together were cut short.  They were lucky to have Ginny, who stepped in to be Mia's nanny.  It was interesting to watch the changing dynamic between Jenna and her sister, Sophia, when they knew the end was coming for Jenna.  Their mother had died of cancer when they were young ... Jenna had stayed away in school leaving Sophia to take care of their mother.  Jenna later felt guilty about it while Sophia understandably pissed.  I thought the relationship between Mia and Kris was handled well.

Ardastra Gardens, Zoo & Conservation Centre, Nassau, Bahamas

Sister Sarah and I went to the Ardastra Gardens, Zoo & Conservation Centre today.

In the heart of Nassau, more than four acres of lush tropical gardens are inhabited by a variety of animal species, including the national bird of the Bahamas, the Caribbean flamingo. Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Conservation Centre was created by Jamaican horticulturalist Hedley Edwards in the 1950s. He developed the picturesque and exotic gardens as a nature preserve, later bringing in flamingoes from the southern Bahamas. In 1980, the gardens were purchased by Norman Solomon, whose passion for wildlife and conservation education inspired him to incorporate more animals into the gardens and create a boutique zoo. Today, thousands of visitors visit annually to marvel at the tranquil, restorative gardens; enjoy close encounters with our collection of over 135 animals; and admire the long-legged flamingo beauties National Geographic has called “Ballerinas in Pink”. The opportunity to enjoy this rare gem will be a highlight for visitors of all ages.

Ardastra Gardens depends on philanthropic support from the public to meet its operating needs and to fulfill its educational and conserving missions.

Conservation education is truly a window on the world, allowing us to share in the global commitment to preserving natural species of plants and animals. The team at Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Conservation Centre dedicates much of its time, expertise, and resources to promoting conservation through programs which ensure the survival of many endangered species, as well to encourage recycling, reusing and the use of environmentally friendly products.

By providing a sanctuary and survival centre for the plants and animals of the world's vanishing natural habitats, Ardastra can help visitors and researchers learn more about these creatures, while giving them a chance to flourish and breed in a near natural setting.

It was a $15 cab ride or a $1.25 bus ride so we took the bus.  It was about a 10 minute walk from the main road when we got off the bus.

    Me
    Sister Sarah

Admittance was $16 each and there were lots of birds, reptiles, animals and plants.

We got there in time for the lory parrot feeding, which was fun.  We were let into a cage where there were lots of lory parrots.  Everyone was given slices of apples and the birds came flying to us.  It was a very cool fun experience!

Cable Beach, Bahamas - Day 3

Sister Sarah and I spent the morning at the beach.  It was sunny and breezy and the waves were quite strong.

    Sister Sarah

After lunch we hung out by the pool for the afternoon.

Here comes my favourite sister with drinks!
Sister Sarah risks drowning for a drink :)

There are four places to eat at this resort.  Tonight we checked out the only one you need reservations for, which has an Italian theme ... we had an 8pm reservation.

Book ~ "Right Click" (2014) Lisa Becker

From LisaWBecker.com ~ Love. Marriage. Infidelity. Parenthood. Crises of identity. Death. Cupcakes. The themes in Right Click, the third and final installment in the Click series, couldn’t be more pressing for this group of friends as they navigate through their 30s.

Another six months have passed since we last eavesdropped on the hilarious, poignant and often times inappropriate email adventures of Renee and friends. As the light-hearted, slice of life story continues to unfold, relationships are tested and some need to be set “right” before everyone can find their “happily ever after.”

Renee and Ethan are engaged and soon to be married.  Shelley has moved to Seattle to be with Nick.  Ashley has just had a baby and is adjusting to being a stay-at-home mom.  Mark is engaged to Cassidy.

What's interesting about this (and the previous ones) is that the entire book is written in email format.  So you follow the gist of what is going on between these friends via their emails back and forth to each other.  That may sound complicated but it's not hard to follow.

This is the third book I've read by this author and I enjoyed it.  I liked the writing style ... most of the time, it was funny and sarcastic.  As a head's up, the language at times is for a more mature reader, especially with Shelley's emails.

This is the third in a series ... I've read them all.  Even though this is the third in the series, it works as a stand alone.

    Happy Victoria Day!

In Canada, the celebration of Victoria Day occurs every year on Monday, prior to May 25th.

It is the official celebration of the birthdays of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II.

Victoria Day was established as a holiday in Canada West (now Ontario) in 1845 and became a national holiday in 1901. Before Victoria Day became a national holiday, we had celebrated Empire Day, beginning in the 1890s as Victoria approached her Diamond jubilee in 1897.

Victoria, queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and empress of India, was born on 24 May 1819. She ascended the throne after the death of her uncle, George IV, in 1837 when she was only 18. She ruled until her death in 1901 when her son, Edward the VII, became king of England.

The Daiquiri Shack, Cable Beach, Bahamas

Sister Sarah and I had a late supper in the lobby bar.  There was a fella singing Spanish songs ... he was good but a bit mellow.

So we took a walk off the resort and discovered the Daiquiri Shack (the Daq Shack), which is across the street from our hotel.

How could we not stop in for a daiquiri made with fresh strawberries?  It was nice to sit outside on a picnic bench.

Cable Beach, Bahamas - Day 2

When I woke up this morning about 8am, it was grey and cloudy ... oh no!

By 9:30, the sun was shining ... yippee!  Here's the view from my balcony.

I left a voice message for Sister Sarah and went down for the breakfast buffet.  I had a lovely spot just out of the sun.

My breakfast, including an antioxidant juice and an energy juice
The energy juice is on the left and the antioxidant juice is on the right

Then I headed for the beach and spent the morning there.  It was sunny and breezy.

Cable Beach, Bahamas - Day 1

Sister Sarah and I are staying at a resort in Cable Beach in the Bahamas.

We got here late this afternoon and are here for a week.

It's grey, humid and windy.  We grabbed a late lunch at the buffet and then had some cocktails at the pool bar.

    Me and Sister Sarah

It's supposed to be sunny tomorrow ... whoohoo!

There was supposed to be karaoke at the pool bar but it was too windy so it was cancelled.  We had a couple drinks there and then went to the lobby bar.

Here's Sister Sarah showing off her Hurricane.

We ordered a late supper ... wings and and split an order of nachos.  They were surprisingly good!

There was a fella singing ... he was good!

There isn't a disco or night club at the resort so it was the place to be.

    The Wheat Sheaf, Toronto, ON

After Gord and I had our pedicures, we had supper at the Wheat Sheaf (Bathurst/King Street W).

    From the menu

Gord ordered fish and chips ... today there was a free soup with it.  He said the soup and fries were just okay (he likes shoe string fries better) and really enjoyed the fish and coleslaw.

Beauty Line Nail Spa, Toronto, ON

Gord and I haven't had a pedicure since the end of March ... so we were due.

We went to Beauty Line Nail Spa (King Street W/Bathurst), which isn't too far from our 'hood.

It was quite busy when we got there but Shirley and Monica took care of us right away.

Lots of colours to choose from!

I chose China Glaze's Beach Cruise.  I'm heading to the Bahamas tomorrow with Sister Sarah and it will match well with my bathing suits.

     Ta-da!

In addition to getting the pedicure, we also got a 10 minute leg and foot massage for $10.  Yes!

It's been a while since I've been there and I'll be back.
