Rain rain go away

KC hates the rain.

Despises it.

We have to drag her outside when it's raining so she can do what she has to do.

I bought her a raincoat.

She's not too crazy about it ... probably because it's too big.

It was raining this morning and here she is with her raincoat.

Book ~ "Cheech & Chong: The Unauthorized Autobiography" (2008) Tommy Chong

From Amazon ~ Tommy Chong, America's favorite stoner comedian, he takes us on a nostalgic trip through his career with partner, Richard "Cheech" Marin. Over the course of their decades-long partnership, Cheech and Chong performed to sold-out crowds across the country, made nine hit albums, starred in eight blockbuster movies, and created memorable and iconic characters that still resonate with fans today.

But the good life didn't just appear in a haze of smoke. It all started during the late 1960s in a strip club in the fragile heart of Vancouver's Chinatown, where Tommy was winding down his career as a Motown recording artist and starting an improv comedy troupe, and Cheech was a draft-dodging, pottery-throwing, underground music reviewer. Together they came to define the hippie-era counterculture, and their celebrated movie debut, Up in Smoke, remains one of the highest-grossing Warner Bros. films ever.

In his very own unauthorized autobiography, Chong reveals his unique relationship with Cheech and recalls the inspiration for their most beloved bits. He introduces famous guest stars like Peter Sellers, John Belushi, Jimi Hendrix, Dan Aykroyd, John Lennon, Diana Ross, and Jack Nicholson, and examines the influences that had the greatest impact on his comedy -- from R&B musicians and Redd Foxx to Lenny Bruce and (of course) marijuana. Finally, with keen insight and utter candor, he explores the rift that has separated the legendary comedy team for more than twenty years.

From pot smoking to politics to the universe at large, Cheech & Chong: The Unauthorized Autobiography is the closest you'll ever get to sitting in a van made entirely of marijuana, trading stories with an unlikely legend, and feeling ... well ... funny.

I'd seen Cheech and Chong's movies when they first came out in the 1980s. They were funny in their day ... would they hold up today? So I was interested in reading about them.

The writing style is casual and conversational which I liked ... lots of F-sharps, etc., though. Not a big surprise, right?

Before I read his book, my impression of Tommy Chong was that of a laid-back likeable stoner. I can't say that I came away liking him as a person when I was finished. His story and experiences were interesting. But he's 70 years old now and at times came across as a dirty old man. Yuk. Other times I found him to be very arrogant and self-indulged.

So I would recommend this book if you were/are a Cheech and Chong fan.

They are currently touring together and I can't see how that would work. Two old dudes trying to do the routine they did 30+ years ago when they were still living it.

Sorry, Chia kitty!

This is what a Chia kitty looks like when you forget to "water" him.

Sorry, Chia kitty!

Such a change from last night. Things apparently happen quickly in ChiaLand.

I've since given him a big big drink and I hope he perks up.

KC's stylin'

It's chilly (5C) so KC wore her new fleecy when we went for a walk this evening.

Remembrance Day

On Rememberance Day 1999, singer Terry Kelly was in a drugstore in Dartmouth, NS.

At 10:55am, an announcement came over the store's PA asking customers who would still be on the premises at 11:00am to give two minutes of silence in respect to the veterans who have sacrificed so much for us.

Terry was impressed with the store's leadership role in adopting the Legion's "two minutes of silence" initiative. He felt that the store's contribution of educating the public to the importance of remembering was commendable.

When 11:00 arrived, an announcement was again made asking for the "two minutes of silence" to commence. All customers, with the exception of a man who was accompanied by his young child, showed their respect.

Terry's anger towards the father for trying to engage the store's clerk in conversation and for setting a bad example for his child was later channeled into "A Pittance of Time". Terry later recorded it included it on his full-length music CD, "The Power of the Dream".

Chia kitty is almost there!

Here's Chia kitty tonight.

Kitties don't like sweaters

I have a small dog sweater ... too small for KC.

But not too small for Morgan. Hee hee hee!

Have you ever tried to put a sweater on a kitty?

It's not easy.

But I persevered and got it on him.

He wasn't happy.

I tried to put it on Byron but he got away from me.

Knitting and movies

Gord was in St. Catharines in a fencing tournament today ... he came in 24/48. Yay, Gord!

I spent the day on the couch knitting and watching movies ... that's what I was in the mood for.

I watched:

* Mallrats - I'd never seen it before. Not a good as I was expecting.
* The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - it's been a while since I've seen it
* My Big Fat Greek Wedding
* Stripes
* Wild Hogs
* There's Something About Mary
* Meet the Parents - I went to bed halfway

I've been wanting to learn how to entrelac. I think it's a cool pattern and I was getting it ... but I wasn't enjoying doing it. So pulled the dishcloth apart after a couple hours.

Instead I made a fin and feather pattern dish cloth:

Cotton yarn and size 4.5mm knitting needles

Cast on 42 stitches (or a multiple of 18 plus 6)

Knit 3 rows of garter stitch for the border

Row 4: Knit

Row 5: K 3, P to last 3 stitches K3

Row 6: K3, *(K2 tog) 3 times, (yo, K1) 6 times, (K2 tog) 3 times, rep from * to last 3 sts K3

Row 7: Knit

Repeat Rows 4 - 7, keeping first and last 3 stitches in garter stitch, until piece measures desired length

Knit 3 more rows of garter stitch to make the bottom border

Cast off and darn in ends

Chia kitty update

Here's Chia kitty tonight.

Once he gets started, there's no stopping him!

Mr. Loogie

I read about Mr. Loogie in Thursday's Toronto Sun.

It's in our 'hood so KC and I walked by this morning.

Looks like a store, doesn't it?

But it's not. It's a fake store front.

From the A City Renewal Project's website:

A City Renewal Project blends the wallpapered photography techniques of fauxreel with the graphic and painterly approach of Specter as they recreate a neighborhood full of abandoned storefronts inside a 4000 square foot warehouse at 39 Lisgar Avenue in Toronto. The project focuses on the state of decay within the city, renewing these dilapidated buildings as artistic monuments and documenting their history amidst the gentrified frenzy of urban change.

Sounds interesting! I'd like to check it out. Here are deets.

What a difference a day makes!

Look at Chia kitty tonight!

Boxing Babes go Cajun

The Boxing Babes went Cajun tonight at Southern Accent (good pick, Trish!). Missing in action tonight were Shawna, Susan and Jen.

There is always a psychic there. I had a session with her before we ate. Lots of good stuff coming apparently ... I'll let you know if/when it comes true.

Monica and Trish

Teena and Yvette

Yvette, Teena, Monica and Trish

As we were leaving, we saw these things hanging next to us and couldn't figure out what they were.

It is a back scratcher as Yvette thought?

No!

Is it a hat as Trish thought?

I'm not sure what Monica thought it was!

Do you know what it is?

Trinity Bellwoods Park

KC and I ended up at Trinity Bellwoods Park, her favourite park.

There are still some colourful leaves on the trees.

How much is that doggy in the window?

At the corner of Queen W/Shaw, we came across this pooch sitting in the window at the Style Garage.

I bet he'd rather be out with us than stuck inside on such a nice day.

How much are these kitties in the window?

On our walk today, KC and I came across these two kitties sitting in the window of a former store (now a residence) soaking up the sun.

See them?

They've got the right idea!

Barbie cases

KC and I took a stroll along Queen Street W this afternoon, enjoying the gorgeous day (17C and sunny ... whoohoo!).

There is a rooming house just east of Dovercourt on Queen W that we passed.

These caught my eye.

Barbie cases!

Remember Barbie cases?

I haven't seen one in years!

These are definitely vintage. I had some like this when I was a kid ... and that wasn't yesterday!

I've only seen older men living in this building so it's kind of an odd place to find them.

Hello Matthew!

I had lunch today with the Fab Five ... Jen, Julie, Laura and Susan. We get together once a month.

It's the first time we've all been together since Julie went on mat leave a couple months ago.

And here's Matthew! Julie brought him so we could meet him.

He's about a month old and a big boy!

Chia kitty is at that ugly awkward stage.

He'll soon be beautiful again!

Book ~ "Last Night at the Lobster" (2007) Stewart O'Nan

From Amazon ~ Set on the last day of business of a Connecticut Red Lobster, this novel tells the story of Manny DeLeon, a conscientious, committed restaurant manager any national chain would want to keep. Instead, corporate has notified Manny that his (and Manny does think of the restaurant as his) location is not meeting expectations and will close December 20. On top of that, he'll be assigned to a nearby Olive Garden and downgraded to assistant manager. It's a loss he tries to rationalize much as he does the loss of Jacquie, a waitress and the former not-so-secret lover he suspects means more to him than his girlfriend Deena, who is pregnant with his child. On this last night, Manny is committed to a dream of perfection but no one and nothing seems to share his vision: a blizzard batters the area, customers are sparse, employees don't show up and Manny has a tough time finding a Christmas gift for Deena. Lunch gives way to dinner with hardly anyone stopping to eat but Manny refuses to close early or give up hope. Small but not slight, the novel is a concise poignant portrait of a man on the verge of losing himself.

I cared about Manny and was amazed at his professionalism right to the end.

I found that there were too many other characters, though, working at the restaurant and I couldn't really keep them straight ... until some started leaving and that's when I got to know who was left better.

It was interesting to see how a chain restaurant (Red Lobster) works as an employee.

I'd heard good things about this book and was on the hold list at the library for months. It was a good story but I'm not sure it warranted the wait.

It's a quick read and I'd recommend it.

Chia kitty's sprouting

Today is the second day Chia kitty has been back and he's starting to sprout already!

Look who's baaaaack!

It's Chia kitty!

He soaked for over 24 hours and is ready to go!

Alarming

I taught Intro Excel today at a site I'd never been to.

There is an alarm but I had the instructions to turn it off.

I unlocked the door and punched in the code and the pressed "off".

But the alarm kept going off.

So I did it again. And again.

And then I heard "This is AlarmForce ... what is your eight digit code?"

I told him my name and said I only had a four digit code.

He (a real guy not an automatic voice) responded that I needed the eight digit code.

I again said I didn't have it.

So he said that the police were on their way.

"Um, okay."

Then someone else called me back and told me how to turn the alarm off via the phone, which worked.

Yay!

He said he was telling the police not to come.

Yay!

But by this time, my heart was pounding with the noise of the alarm and the thought of the police arriving as my students got there.

When I left this afternoon, I set the alarm via the phone and it seemed to work okay.

Yay!
