Book ~ "Cataract City" (2013) Craig Davidson

From Goodreads ~ Owen and Duncan are childhood friends who've grown up in picturesque Niagara Falls - known to them by the grittier name "Cataract City". As the two know well, there's more to the bordertown than meets the eye: behind the gaudy storefronts and sidewalk vendors, past the hawkers of tourist T-shirts and cheap souvenirs live the real people who scrape together a living by toiling at the Bisk, the local cookie factory. And then there are the truly desperate, those who find themselves drawn to the borderline and a world of dog-racing, bare-knuckle fighting and night-time smuggling.

Owen and Duncan think they are different: both dream of escape, a longing made more urgent by a near-death incident in childhood that sealed their bond. But in adulthood their paths diverge, and as Duncan, the less privileged, falls deep into the town's underworld, he and Owen become reluctant adversaries at opposite ends of the law. At stake is not only survival and escape, but a lifelong friendship that can only be broken at an unthinkable price.

Duncan and Owen live in Niagara Falls, ON, and have been friends on and off since they were kids.  There isn't a lot of opportunity in Niagara Falls.  Owen ends up being a cop and escapes for a few years by heading out west.  Duncan works in the local cookie factory, supplementing his income by racing his greyhound, participating in illegal fights and agreeing to smuggle illegal cigarettes across the Canada/U.S. border.  He is living with his former babysitter, Edwina, who also works at the cookie factory.

The story starts with Duncan getting out of prison after eight years and asking Owen, who is back in Niagara Falls, to pick him up.  The book jumps back and forth in time and changes perspective (first person voice) between Duncan and Owen.

I started out enjoying this book but then I found that it started getting long about halfway (it seemed longer than 416 pages).  I thought the writing could have been tighter.  There was a lot of information and detail provided (more than I needed at times).  As a head's up, there is swearing and gruesome fight scenes.  I could have done without the detailed descriptions of abuse of dogs, dog fighting and the illegal fights Duncan gets into to make money.

In general, I found it to be a dreary and depressing story ... there wasn't a lot of happiness.  I found the ending was flat.  After devoting so much time to this book and not giving up, I thought, "This is it?  This is how it ends?"

Book ~ "The Tao of Martha: My Year of LIVING, Or Why I'm Never Getting All That Glitter Off of the Dog" (2013) Jen Lancaster

From Goodreads ~ One would think that with Jen Lancaster’s impressive list of bestselling self-improvement memoirs, that she would have it all together by now.

    One would be wrong.

Jen’s still a little rough around the edges. Suffice it to say, she’s no Martha Stewart. And that is exactly why Jen is going to Martha-up and live her life according to the advice of America’s overachieving older sister - the woman who turns lemons into lavender-infused lemonade.

By immersing herself in Martha’s media empire, Jen will embark on a yearlong quest to take herself, her house, her husband (and maybe even her pets) to the next level - from closet organization to craft making, from party planning to kitchen prep.

Maybe Jen can go four days without giving herself food poisoning if she follows Martha’s dictates on proper storage.  Maybe she can grow closer to her girlfriends by taking up their boring-ass hobbies like knitting and sewing   Maybe she can finally rid her workout clothes of meatball stains by using Martha’s laundry tips.  Maybe she can create a more meaningful anniversary celebration than just getting drunk in the pool with her husband ... again.  And maybe, just maybe, she’ll discover that the key to happiness does, in fact, lie in Martha’s perfectly arranged cupboards and artfully displayed charcuterie platters.

    Or maybe not.

2011 is coming to an end and Jen and Fletcher have been living in their house, along with their three dogs and four cats, for a while.  Something is missing for Jen and she wants to be happier.  She spends 2012 following the advice of Martha Stewart, reading her books, magazines and website, organizing her house, her life and herself.

Lancaster celebrates each of the holidays (Halloween was a hoot!) and writes about  taking care of her pets, taking care of her rose garden, wanting to grow zucchinis, having an overabundance of frozen bananas, learning to knit, cooking from scratch, having a mammogram and lots more.

I liked the tao of Maisy ... be awesome, give awesome, get awesome.

I liked the writing style ... it's funny and sarcastic.  I think she would be fun to be around and her caring of others comes through.  As a head's up, there is swearing.

I've read quite a few of Lancaster's books, though it's been a while, so it's time to catch up.

    JOEY Don Mills, Toronto, ON

I had seminars to conduct in east Toronto today and had lunch at JOEY Don Mills.

I ordered the Hourly Roasted Rotisserie Chicken Entree (minus the veggies).  I had it in their Winnipeg location in May and enjoyed it. There were two pieces of chicken ... the chicken was really tender. The potatoes were like homemade and the gravy was tasty.

    Obviously I'd get it again.

Tamara was my server and she took good care of me.  Plus two others (managers?) stopped by during my meal to make sure that everything was okay.

Toronto Blue Jays 10, Oakland Athletics 3, Rogers Centre, Toronto, ON

My friend, Jenn, had a couple of tickets for this evening's Blue Jays game she couldn't use so she asked me if I wanted them ... yes!  Thanks, Jenn!

Before the game, the Jays were a half a game behind the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East.  If the Blue Jays won and the Yankees lost, Toronto would be first.  So it was a big game!

Here's a view from our seats ... the roof was open which was nice as there was a breeze.

R.A. Dickey was pitching ... and the game began.

    Corned Beef House, Toronto, ON

Gord and I had supper this evening at the Corned Beef House (John Street/Adelaide W).  It's our favourite place for corned beef and Montreal smoked meat sandwiches.

We got what we always get ... a gigantic Montreal smoked meat sandwich and a gigantic corned beef sandwich.  And then we gave a half of each.
