Book ~ "High Chicago" (2009) Howard Shrier

From Amazon ~ Toronto investigator Jonah Geller has opened his own agency, World Repairs, and he and his partner, Jenn Raudsepp, are immediately drawn into investigating the apparent suicide of a young girl — and the high-stakes world of construction and development on a long-neglected parcel of Toronto’s waterfront.

Clues lead them to suspect that fabled real estate tycoon Simon Birk — the partner of the dead girl’s father — is killing people who get in the way of the project but the evidence isn’t rock solid. And Jonah has to craft an audacious plan to take down one of Chicago’s most powerful men.

There aren't many stories that are based in Toronto so I was drawn to this one ... especially because it was a mystery.

It took me a couple chapters to get into it but once I did, I found it interesting.

This is the second in the series so I'm going to go back and read the first one.

I find it curious that male investigators must have lesbian partners ... why?

Does swine flu mean the end of the handshake?

Since the arrival of the swine flu/H1N1, have you stopped shaking hands when you greet people?

I haven't.

There is an article in today's Toronto Star about it.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday in October in Canada. Unlike the American tradition of remembering Pilgrims and settling in the New World, Canadians give thanks for a successful harvest. The harvest season falls earlier in Canada than the United States.

The history of Thanksgiving in Canada goes back to an English explorer named Martin Frobisher, who had been trying to find a northern passage to the Orient. He did not succeed but he did establish a settlement in Northern America. In 1578, he held a formal ceremony, in what is now called Newfoundland, to give thanks for surviving the long journey. This is considered the first Canadian Thanksgiving. Other settlers arrived and continued these ceremonies. He was later knighted and had an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean in northern Canada named after him - Frobisher Bay.

At the same time, French settlers, crossed the ocean and arrived in Canada with explorer, Samuel de Champlain, also held huge feasts of thanks. They even formed 'The Order of Good Cheer' and gladly shared their food with their Indian neighbours.

After the Seven Year's War ended in 1763, the citizens of Halifax held a special day of Thanksgiving.

During the American Revolution, Americans who remained loyal to England moved to Canada where they brought the customs and practices of the American Thanksgiving to Canada. There are many similarities between the two Thanksgivings such as the cornucopia and pumpkin pie.

Eventually in 1879, Parliament declared November 6 a day of Thanksgiving and a national holiday. Over the years many dates were used for Thanksgiving. The most popular was the third Monday in October. After World War I, both Armistice Day and Thanksgiving were celebrated on the Monday of the week in which November 11 occurred. In 1931, the two days became separate holidays and Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day.

On January 31, 1957, Parliament proclaimed ... A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed ... to be observed on the second Monday in October.

Thanksgiving dinner

It's Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada.

I spent some of the day writing an article about life insurance (a freelance gig).

Because it's just the two of us, we don't do a turkey ... too much leftover turkey.

Instead we do Cornish Hens. Nothing fancy ... just stuffed with Stove Top Stuffing.

The furkids only get soft (canned) food on special occasions. Here they are chowing down on duck-flavoured.

Their plates were empty so I think they liked it. Ha!

Lots of snoozin' going on now!

The Queen and Beaver, Toronto, ON

The Queen and Beaver opened in June ... and Gord and I have been looking forward to checking it out. It's at Elm Street/Yonge Street.

We walked there today.

Here's Gord outside the pub ...

The downstairs is more formal with tables. We headed upstairs where it's more casual with couches and chairs.

Here's Gord at the bar ...

Here's Gord on our couch ...

And Gord and I ...

Gord had fun in the bathroom. There are soccer nets imported from England in the urinals.

Alas, the ladies' washroom was boring.

And here's Gord with the beaver ...

Here's when we left ...

Keep in mind that it was London, England, time!

New Street ... literally!

KC and I took a stroll this morning on the CAMH grounds.

Here's a new street they put in recently.

And what did they call it?

New Street!

I kid you not!

Vinny Massimo's, Toronto, ON

I love pizza ... love love love it!

When I moved to Toronto more than 20 years ago, I would walk to Massimo's at College/Spadina every once in a while for a slice.

Yum!

Then I moved and it wasn't as handy but I'd stop in when I was in that 'hood.

Last month I saw a sign that they were coming to our 'hood at Queen W/Dovercourt. Whoohoo! Apparently there was a fire at their old location and they shut down.

After my massage this evening, I walked to Massimo's for a slice for supper.

It was a big slice ... tasty but greasy.

No doubt the diet ginger ale negated the calories. Ha!

It's become quite a restaurant strip at Queen W/Dovercourt lately. Besides the more expensive restaurants, joining Pizza Pizza are Massimo's, Poutini's and Subway. It's nice to have cheaper choices.

Professional pix

Remember the professional pix I had taken last month?

I choose the one I wanted and got it back from the photographer today. I see he has softened it a bit.

Here it is in colour ...

And black 'n white ...

Would you trust me giving you retirement planning info?

You should!

Book ~ "Fear the Worst" (2009) Linwood Barclay

From Goodreads ~ Your daughter doesn’t come home one night from her summer job. You go there looking for her. No one’s seen her. But it’s worse than that. No one’s ever seen her. So where has she been going every day? And where is she now?

In Linwood Barclay’s riveting new thriller, an ordinary man’s desperate search for his daughter leads him into a dark world of corruption, exploitation, and murder. Tim Blake is about to learn that the people you think you know best are the ones harboring the biggest secrets.

Tim is an average guy. He sells cars. He has an ex-wife. She’s moved in with a man whose moody son spends more time online than he should. His girlfriend is turning out to be a bit of a flake. It’s not a life without hassles, but nothing will prepare Tim for the nightmare that’s about to begin.

Sydney vanishes into thin air. At the hotel where she supposedly worked, no one has ever heard of her. Even her closest friends seem to be at a loss. Now, as the days pass without word, Tim must face the fact that not only is Sydney missing, but that the daughter he’s loved and thought he knew is a virtual stranger.

As he retraces Sydney’s steps, Tim discovers that the suburban Connecticut town he always thought of as idyllic is anything but. What he doesn’t know is that his every move is being watched. There are others who want to find Syd as much as Tim does.

But they’re not planning a Welcome Home party.

The closer Tim comes to the truth, the closer he comes to every parent’s worst nightmare—and the kind of evil only a parent’s love has a chance in hell of stopping.

I enjoy Barclay's writing. It's fast-paced and action-packed.

This wasn't a bad story and I will admit that I peeked ahead to see if Sydney was alive at the end of the book (you'll have to read it yourself to see if she makes it).

For a car salesman, Tim attracts a lot of trouble but amazingly is able to able to conquer it.

There is a soap operaist twist towards the end. I can see why it happened (cuz it needed to tie the story together) but I thought it was dumb.

But all in all, I'd recommend it.

Supper with friends

I had supper tonight with some former coworkers at Canyon Creek downtown.

Shaun and I coincidentally work for the same company now. Jen, Julie, Laura and Susan are still with the company Shaun and I used to work for.

Jen, Teena, Shaun, Julie, Laura and Susan

It was great to see them and catch up!

I hadn't seen them in about a year ... hard to believe that much time has passed.

It's been over two years since I worked with them ... and I miss hanging with them everyday.

April Wine

Darlene, Angie and I had tickets to see April Wine tonight. Alas, Angie is still getting over pneumonia so couldn't go.

Darlene and I met for supper at Shoeless Joe's in our 'hood since the concert was also in our 'hood at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

Our seats were good ... in the middle of row M. Myles Goodwyn sounded just as good as he did 30 years ago!

Afterwards, we had a beer in the swanky lounge. There's Darlene at the bar.

Here are my two favourite April Wine tunes ... alas, we didn't hear them:

Shopping

I'm not a shopper ... I do it when I need something so have to.

Since I'm working in an office full-time now I needed more less casual shoes. So today I headed to the Dufferin Mall.

I bought these shoes at Spring.

These shoes caught my eye at Payless months ago. Yes, they are casual but they were on sale so I got 'em.

I don't use a purse ... I walk a lot so use knapsacks instead. I went to a meeting yesterday for a prospective client and that made me realize that I need a decent purse. So I bought this one at Aldo ... it's purple and is like an old doctor's bag.

Plus I bought some gym shorts, a couple of tops and a couple of sweaters.

That outta do it!

I won!

A couple weeks ago I went shopping at the Dufferin Mall.

As soon as I went into one of the stores, there was a Mary Kay saleswoman just inside the door.

I've never used Mary Kay products ... I like Avon. She proceeded to tell me that Avon was inferior to Mary Kay. I just wanted to shop rather get a lecture so I walked away.

I found some stuff to buy. At the cashier, I was asked to fill in a ballot for a draw.

I got a call last week that my name had been picked! I didn't win the shopping spree at the store. Ironically I won the Mary Kay prize. Ha!

I picked it up this afternoon and it was a shower gel, body lotion and body spritzer (Red Tea and Fig). A $72 value!

Cross-generational friendships

There's an interesting article in the October issue of More magazine called "Don't Mind the Gap".

If your entourage doesn't include any Gen Xers or seniors, why not? Some of the best relationships skip a generation.

It's about the benefits of having friends who are younger and older than you, rather than just your age.

Your younger friends keep you young and give you a spark.

Your older friends can share their experience and wisdom with you.

I'm lucky in that I have lots of great friends of different ages.

My youngest friend is probably Yvette, who is 32ish. She's a fitness trainer and a a Master in the Art and Science of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming). I met her in the summer of 2004 when she became my trainer and boxing instructor.

My oldest friend is probably Deb, who is 54ish. Deb and I worked together in 1995 and have stayed tight since. She and I are part of the Chillin' Chicks.

Who are your youngest and oldest friends?

More condos to come?

Sue was lamenting last week about stores and restaurants being closed to build more condos.

We noticed last week that the Famous PEOPLE Players building is fenced up, getting ready to be knocked down for condos?

I took KC for a walk this afternoon to check it out.

Famous PEOPLE Players have relocated to Etobicoke.

KC and I rounded the corner and headed towards Queen Street W. There are a couple other buildings fenced up, ready to go ... on the east side.

... and on the west side (this building has been closed up as long as I've lived in the 'hood).

BTW, here is the parking lot where Gord and I enjoyed the Havana Cultura Festival on Saturday night.

It's back to normal today.

Blogger help needed

When I logged onto my blog yesterday morning, it didn't point to my blog ... it pointed to some odd site.

I use Blogger and bought my URL from them last year. It's only $10 a year and they take care of everything (registering, etc.).

I searched their site to see what I should do.

I couldn't find a contact on their site to asked about it so I posted my query on their forum.

I got this response back:

nitecruzr has posted an answer to the question "Not my blog when you go to the URL":

Your problem is in the DNS addresses. Please read the cited articles for details.

I'll show excerpted Dig logs, here.

I'm sure I could figure out how to fix it ... except that because Blogger set it up, I can't get at the DNS address.

So I responded back to the forum but haven't heard anything more.

Can someone pleez help me?!

In the meantime, I've switched back to the Blogspot address.

Book ~ "Bermuda Schwartz" (2008) Bob Morris

From Amazon.com ~ When a benign trip to Bermuda with his significant other is upset by a brutal murder, and some financial jiggery-pokery robs him of $2 million from a Bermuda bank account, former Miami Dolphins linebacker Zack Chasteen blitzes. He's quickly up to his keister in violent local thugs, the search for sunken treasure, Bermudan police and his own machinations to recover his two mil. Morris' third Zack novel is amiable, engaging and brisk, and Zack's direct approach to problem solving is a pleasant change of pace from so many of today's conflicted and complex fictional knights errant. But some readers may feel they've been shorted on character development, and others will miss a strong sense of place.

This is the third in the Zack Chasteen series.

I enjoyed the first two (though I'd read them out of order). This one was okay, not as good as the first two.

I found that it got bogged down with too many details of the history of the sunken treasure. And there seemed to be so many characters to keep track of (no doubt to throw the reader off).

I wasn't enthused about the one who dunnit ... and less excited about the quick wrap up at the end. It wasn't necessary.

Havana Cultura Festival

The Havana Cultura Festival is in our 'hood this weekend.

It is sponsored by Havana Club.

We stopped in at the Outdoor Extravaganza which took over a parking lot.

There were a couple food vendors and you could buy Cuba Libres and Mojitos made with Havana Club rum.

Here's Gord!

It got chilly and rainy so we went home to get our jackets.

There was good entertainment ... jazz, classical, soul, rap and rock.

It started pouring rain so everyone was given umbrellas ...

We were soaked but everyone stayed and had fun!
