“Bob Marley: How Reggae Changed the World”, The Toronto Fringe Festival, Tarragon Theatre, Toronto, ON

I just saw Bob Marley: How Reggae Changed the World with Duane Forrest, part of the Toronto Fringe Festival, at the Tarragon Theatre.

Join Duane Forrest on an acoustic journey through the roots of reggae to the global influence of Bob Marley. Experience acoustic renditions of legendary reggae songs that have reshaped countless lives, including Duane’s own. Audience members are invited to sing along and get involved in this interactive musical experience.

It was soooooo good! Duane told stories of growing up in Scarborough, Bob Marley, Jamaican history and more. He sang reggae songs (and explained what they meant) and encouraged everyone to sing along (which we did). There was a lot of love in the audience … we gave him a standing ovation! Today was supposed the last show but it won the patron’s award so another show was added for tomorrow afternoon … you gotta go check it out!

El Catrin Destileria, Toronto, ON

Gord and I had supper at El Caltrin in the Distillery District. It was really hot and humid on the patio and the constant mist helped.

We started with a Sangria de la Casa (red wine, guerra vermouth, pressed juice, fresh fruit).

Gord had Atún Ceviche (ahi tuna, watermelon, guajillo, lime, cilantro, radishes).

“Me and You and the Highland Coo”, The Toronto Fringe Festival, Young Centre for the Performing Arts, Toronto, ON

While volunteering for The Toronto Fringe Festival this afternoon at the TD Finance Studio at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts, I got to see Me and You and the Highland Coo.

Gord and I were in Scotland in the fall of 2023 so it was fun to relive it! There was lots of amusing audience participation.

Buckle up because Jackie and Charlie have a plan: road trip across Scotland, find the perfect Highland coo, and definitely not think about their problems back home in Canada. With carpool karaoke, trivia and too many snacks, what could go wrong? All that’s missing, is you!

Starring an award-winning Montreal cast, ‘Me and You and the Highland Coo’ is a heartfelt and hilarious road trip adventure about hope, friendship and change, with a hint of magic.

“Acting Lessons”, The Toronto Fringe Festival, Young Centre for the Performing Arts, Toronto, ON

While volunteering for The Toronto Fringe Festival this afternoon at the TD Finance Studio at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts, I got to see Acting Lessons. I met the actors and their team last evening on the Fringe patio so was looking forward to it.

When Molly and Keegan meet at a callback, it’s practically love at first sight. Fast forward a few years, and the honeymoon phase has dwindled a bit. Trying to make ends meet as a couple of actors in the city is no easy feat! Molly is working overtime on a junior Shakespeare production and struggling to get auditions. Keegan is a part-time server and auditioning around the clock. With two different work ethics and approaches to the craft, tensions rise as Molly’s career takes a step back and Keegan’s propels forward …

It was really good. The range of emotions between the actors was very realistic, not surprising since they are partners in real life. They have one more show tomorrow, which is sold out.

Mill Street Brew Pub, Toronto, ON

I had supper at Mill Street Brew Pub in the Distillery District.

I had buttermilk chicken tenders with plum sauce and fries. The tenders were really good. It’s a big meal and I left most of my fries.

Gordon was my server … he was friendly and took good care of me.

“Bitty-Bat and Friends”, The Toronto Fringe Festival, Young Centre for the Performing Arts, Toronto, ON

I  saw Bitty-Bat and Friends, part of the The Toronto Fringe Festival at Soulpepper’s Tank House Theatre this afternoon.

Join Bitty-Bat as she charms and intimidates the audience deep into her world, only to be interrupted by a strange know-it-all voice interfering with her daily rituals. Each Bitty-Bat performance will feature a guest opening act, making every show an incredible night to remember!

I discovered Bitty-Bat at the Comedy is Art Festival at The Theatre Centre in October and thought she was a hoot … and she was again today. Just two shows left and you should go check it out!

“Everything You Do is a Balloon”, The Toronto Fringe Festival, Young Centre for the Performing Arts, Toronto, ON

I spent the afternoon volunteering for The Toronto Fringe Festival at the TD Finance Studio at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts.

I ushered Everything You Do is a Balloon (so got to watch it).

If a balloon pops in the middle of a birthday party and all the kids are in the bouncy castle, are you even a gay Jew? Through dance, music, twerking and complaining, this solo show explores the current culture of identity politics and our contentious relationship between individuality and belonging. Together we will contemplate, pontificate and flatulate on the many ways identity can unite us and isolate us.

Book ~ "The Retirement Plan" (2025) Sue Hincenbergs

From Goodreads ~ Three wives wanting a new life, three husbands in their way ...

After thirty years of friendship, Pam dreams of her perfect retirement with Nancy, Shalisa, Marlene and their husbands - until their husbands pool their funds for an investment that goes terribly wrong and their dreams of beachfront condos and a sunny carefree retirement vanish. The golden years are looking as dreary as their marriages.

But when one husband dies in a freak accident, the other three women are shocked to see his widow rebound with a huge life insurance payout and a new life in Florida. In the aftermath, the women discover that their husbands have identical, seven-figure life insurance policies. A new dream forms and this time, it involves a hitman.

Meanwhile, their husbands have a secret retirement plan of their own. So when things begin to go awry, they fear their own scheme may have backfired ... with deadly consequences. The husbands scramble to stay alive but they may not be fast enough to outmaneuver their wives.

What follows is a high-stakes tale of cat and mouse, both laugh-out-loud funny and unbearably tense, while ultimately a bighearted look at marriage, friendship, and middle-age.

Couples Pam and Hank, Nancy and Larry, Andre and Shalisa and Marlene and Dave have been best friends forever. Things turned sour a couple years ago when Hank talked the guys into investing their retirement savings into a scheme that went bad. Now in their early 60s, instead of enjoying their relaxing retirement, they are all still working and the women feel bitter and unappreciated.

When Dave suddenly dies in a freak accident and Marlene gets a huge insurance payout (and a fresh start in Florida), the other wives can’t help but wonder if the same thing can happen for them. Pam, Nancy and Shalisa start plotting their own "accidental" retirements and find a hit man to bump off Hank, Larry and Andre so they too can get a huge insurance payout and join Marlene. The husbands felt bad about ruining their retirement dreams and unbeknownst to the wives, have been illegally growing the assets back over the last four years as a surprise. Then things don't turn out as planned.

It is the debut novel by this author and I enjoyed it. The story itself was intriguing (and no, it didn't give me any ideas ... ha!). I liked the writing style ... it was humorous with lots of twists and turns. It's written in third person perspective with a focus on the various characters. I liked the characters ... the four couples were my age so I could relate to where they were in life. There were some other funny characters ... Padma, Hank's clueless boss at the casino whose mother in India keeps trying to marry her off via a matchmaker; Hector, the barber/hitman; Brenda, Hector's wife; and even Elmer, Pam's rescue dog. As a head's up, there is swearing and violence.

Kingsway Fish and Chips, Toronto, ON

I had lunch today with Cheryl, my line dancing buddy at Kingsway Fish and Chips (Bloor W, west of Royal York)., which is in her 'hood. So nice to see Cheryl and catch up!

We both had Halibut & a Few (half the chips), which was good.

For dessert, Cheryl had chocolate ice cream and I had an apple pecan crisp. Yum!

Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto, ON

I was downtown today so stopped by Nathan Phillips Square, our city hall.

I got a beef hot dog at city hall for a late lunch/early supper. Yum! A few trucks to choose from with $5 dogs so I went with the one that proclaimed they have been serving Toronto for over 30 years.
