"Witness for the Prosecution", Royal George Theatre, Niagara-on-the-Lake

Gord and I saw Witness for the Prosecution at the Royal George Theatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake this afternoon. 

When a wealthy, older woman is found brutally murdered, there is only one suspect: her handsome, charming and much-younger lover. Sure, he has a motive, but did he actually do it? Due to a strict, no-spoilers policy, we can’t answer that question. Here’s what we can say: the play is full of clever twists, witty dialogue and rising tension. If you’re a fan of riveting courtroom dramas, don’t miss this shocker.

It was very good. It was close to the movie but had some humour.

Gord and I saw Gypsy this afternoon ... it's part of the Shaw Festival.

Gypsy Rose Lee was the world’s most famous striptease artist; Momma Rose the ultimate stage mother. Follow their extraordinary story in Stephen Sondheim’s timeless musical about sex, power and longing. With legendary songs, including “Let Me Entertain You” and “Everything’s Coming up Roses,” Gypsy remains the greatest American musical.

It was at the Festival Theatre.

It was good, fun and lively, especially the second half. Now we're curious to see the movie.

"Damn Yankees", Shaw Festival, Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON

Gord and I saw Damn Yankees this afternoon ... it is part of the Shaw Festival.

Joe Boyd is an out of shape, middle-aged man who has the misfortune to be a Washington Senators fan. One deal with the devil later, he is Joe Hardy, a young ball player with a knack for hitting home runs. Can he help his favourite team finally beat the powerhouse New York Yankees? The final score: a delightful, fast-paced, crowd-pleasing, romantic musical.

It was good ... lots of singing and dancing! Mike Nadajewski as Mr. Applegate, a.k.a. the devil incarnate, stole the show ... he was awesome!

"Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", Shaw Festival, Niagara on the Lake, ON

Gord and I saw Cat on a Hot Tin Roof today ... it is part of the Shaw Festival.

Combine the sultry heat of the Mississippi Delta with Tennessee Williams’ rich language, add Maggie the Cat and you’ve got an American classic, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Maggie and Brick’s marriage is on the rocks and Brick is drinking as much as he can to quiet his thoughts and forget about his past. But Big Daddy’s inheritance is at stake and his two sons and their wives fight to win their share. An explosive drama and a Pulitzer Prize-winning play.

It is playing at the Royal George Theatre on Queen Street.

We'd seen this play five years ago at the Stratford Festival and enjoyed it ... it's one of Gord's favourites. They did a good job with it today. The actors playing Maggie and Big Daddy were fabulous, as was the one playing Big Mama. It's a three act play with two intermissions.

It was interesting and annoying going on a Wednesday afternoon as there were a lot of older people in attendance. We got our tickets just a couple weeks ago so were in the balcony on the left hand side. All around us, we had older women chatting and opening candy wrappers. A woman behind us had her cell phone go off. All no-nos! Gord and I gave them the "stern" glare but it didn't work.
