A Dog's Breakfast, Windsor, ON

Gord and I had brunch this morning at the Dog's Breakfast in Windsor ... it's our go-to place for brunch when we are in Windsor.

We didn't want a sad late breakfast so we had mimosas!

Gord had Eggs Benny and Mark and I had Good Ol' Breakfast with peameal bacon (our usual!).  Both were good!

JL was our server and she took good care of us.

Terroni Adelaide, Toronto, ON

I had supper this evening at Terroni Adelaide (on Adelaide E.) with Linda, Anne and Franca (Franca and I have been friends since the mid 1990s).

And here we are ... Linda, Anne, me and Franca!

We all had pizza.  I had a Sophia pizza (tomato, mozzarella, sweet genoa salame). It was delicious and I took half home for my lunch tomorrow.

Alex was friendly and chatty and took good care of us.

Float Toronto, Toronto, ON

I went for an hour float this afternoon at Float Toronto (on Queen Street W at Gladstone).  I find floats very relaxing.

Also known as Floatation Therapy, REST Therapy (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Technique) or Sensory Deprivation, floating involves lying in a salt-water solution in a specially designed tank (often referred to as a float tank, sensory deprivation tank, or isolation tank). Your experience in a floatation tank is about everything you won’t be doing. You won’t be fighting gravity. The 850 pounds of Epsom salt in the water takes care of that while you lie on your back. The water is kept at a skin receptor neutral temperature which means that you lose track of where your body ends and the water begins. Your ears stay just below the water, and the tanks are insulated against sound – noise from the outside is unable to reach you. After you shut the door to the tank, you float in total darkness.

During your float the outside world is gone and amazing things happen. It turns out that when you’re not fighting gravity or constantly taking in information your body has a lot of extra resources at its disposal. Your mind is free to navigate without distraction, your brain pumps out dopamine and endorphins, and your body gets to rest, de-stress and heal. It’s likely to be the most relaxing thing you’ve ever experienced.

The tank is high enough for me to stand up, wide enough for me to stretch my arms out and my fingers just touch the side and a lot longer then me.  Today I left the meditative music on and the light off so was in total blackness.

Book ~ "Going Rogue: Rise and Shine Twenty-Nine" (2022) Janet Evanovich

From Goodreads ~ Monday mornings aren’t supposed to be fun but they should be predictable. However, on this particular Monday, Stephanie Plum knows that something is amiss when she turns up for work at Vinnie’s Bail Bonds to find that longtime office manager, Connie Rosolli, who is as reliable as the tides in Atlantic City, hasn’t shown up.

Stephanie’s worst fears are confirmed when she gets a call from Connie’s abductor. He says he will only release her in exchange for a mysterious coin that a recently murdered man left as collateral for his bail. Unfortunately, this coin, which should be in the office - just like Connie - is nowhere to be found.

The quest to discover the coin, learn its value and save Connie will require the help of Stephanie’s Grandma Mazur, her best pal Lula, her boyfriend Morelli, and hunky security expert Ranger. As they get closer to unraveling the reasons behind Connie’s kidnapping, Connie’s captor grows more threatening and soon Stephanie has no choice but to throw caution to the wind, follow her instincts, and go rogue.

Stephanie works for Vince, her bail bondsman cousin, and Lulu, a former 'ho, works with her. When Stephanie and Lulu show up to work on morning, the doors are locked and the lights are out, which is very unusual because Connie, the office manager, is always there ahead of time. After looking around town for her, they get a call that she has been kidnapped and her ransom is collector's coin that was given to Vince as collateral when he bonded someone out of jail. Vince, though, has lost the coin and Stephanie and Lulu start hunting it down so they can save their friend and co-worker.

As usual, Stephanie and Lulu have a couple people they have to track down who didn't show up for their court date, including her boyfriend, Joe's evil grandmother, Bella, who puts the evil eye on everyone.

This is the 29th in the Stephanie Plum series and I've read them all. As in previous books, Evanovich continues to follow her formula:
  • Though dating long time boyfriend, Joe, she is lusting after both Joe and Ranger ... check
  • Lulu talks about food all the time and eating lots ... check
  • Lulu gets mad when people insult her about her weight ... check
  • Stephanie goes home to mooch meals from her parents ... check
  • Ranger calls Stephanie "Babe" and just wants to have sex with her with no commitment ... check
  • Stephanie's car explodes ... check
  • Lulu says "on account of" about a million times ... check

This book was okay. It's written in first person perspective from Stephanie's point of view.  Stephanie is still torn between Joe and Ranger which is tiresome ... she says she loves Joe but is still attracted to Ranger, which Ranger encourages. I found it surprising that she has marriage in her mind so much in this book considering she's cheating on Joe with Ranger. I don't know why she's even with Joe since they don't seem to spend quality time together ... they eat pizza, watch a hockey game and/or have sex. Ranger looks out for her more than Joe does.

Since it's basically the same story over and over, though, I stopped buying these books a long time ago and now borrow them from the library. It's a mindless familiar quick read. As a head's up, there is swearing.

Be a Santa for a Senior Holiday Gift Drive, Toronto, ON

When I'm watching TV, I like to keep my hands busy so I knit small quick projects like mittens, dishcloths, etc.

Last December I'd come across the Be a Santa for a Senior Holiday Gift Drive program, run by Gwen (she's in my 'hood). Gifts donated go to recipients of the Meals on Wheels program run out of West Neighbourhood House (Ossington/Dundas W). Most of these men and women are over 55 and live alone. I'd connected with her and had donated 28 pairs of mittens and a hat I'd knitted and was looking to donate.

This year everything I knitted was for this gift drive. This morning I dropped off my donations … 26 pairs of mittens and four 9-foot soft scarves I knitted this year for the gift drive and 37 cotton dishcloths I’ve knitted the last few years.

Book ~ "Racing the Light" (2022) Robert Crais

From Goodreads ~ Adele Schumacher isn't a typical worried mom. When she hires Elvis to find her missing son, a controversial podcaster named Josh Shoe, she brings a bag filled with cash, bizarre tales of government conspiracies and a squad of professional bodyguards. Finding Josh should be simple but Elvis quickly learns he isn't alone in the hunt - a deadly team of mysterious strangers are determined to find Josh and his adult film star girlfriend first.

With Elvis being watched and dangerous secrets lurking behind every lead, Elvis needs his friend, Joe Pike, more than ever to uncover the truth about Josh, corrupt politicians and the vicious business cartels rotting the heart of Los Angeles from within. And when Elvis Cole's estranged girlfriend, Lucy Chenier, and her son, Ben, return, Elvis learns just how much he has to lose ... if he survives.

Elvis Cole is a private detective and is hired by Adele to find her adult son, Josh, who is a podcaster. Money is no object as she hands him a pile of cash for the job. As Elvis starts to investigate, he discovers that Josh's parents are the retirees he was told they were ... why would they have so many body guards and does who they really are have anything to do with his disappearance?

As Elvis starts on Josh's trail, he discovers that Skylar, a porn star/escort friend of Josh's, is also missing. He figures if he can find Skylar, he'll find Josh since her neighbours have said he'd recently stopped by looking for her. When he discovers that Josh's home has been bugged with super duper surveillance technology, he realizes the story Josh was so intent to uncover and podcast about and it might have gotten him killed.

In the meantime, Lucy, Elvis' ex-girlfriend and the love of his life, is back in town with her teenage son and trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life.

I discovered the Elvis Cole series in the 1990s.  What attracted me to it was that Elvis was funny and tried to be charming ... the books were a fun read.  I found this one (and the last few) was more heavy and serious and not as much fun. There were so many characters and relationships and I thought it was confusing at times.  It it hadn't been a Robert Crais/Elvis Cole book, I'm sad to say I would have given up on it. The book is written in first person perspective when the focus is on Elvis and third person perspective when Elvis is not in the scene.  Though it's #19 in the series, it works as a stand alone.  As a head's up, there is swearing and violence.

Cat Shelter Building Workshop, Toronto Street Cats, Toronto, ON

I spent this morning volunteering with Toronto Street Cats building cat shelters. The workshops are held throughout the fall and winter season in the garage of the Toronto Humane Society.  It's my fifth year volunteering with them ... it's so nice helping the kitties in Toronto keep warm and dry during the cold winter.

Our mission: improve the lives of Toronto’s homeless cats by offering spay/neuter services, free for feral cats, and building overwintering shelters. We are also working to increase public awareness about Toronto’s homeless cat population and the importance of spay/neuter and trap/neuter/return (TNR).

We are part of the Toronto Feral Cat Coalition, working together to implement strategic TNR programs to sterilize Toronto’s feral cats, decrease shelter intake and reduce euthanasia rates.

We taped the insulated walls together in the bins and then taped the tubing entrances ... I started with the first part (I like it better) then moved on to taping the tubing to the shelters. Thom cut the tubing for the entrance ways, cut the Styrofoam for insulated walls and drilled holes into the bins after the insulated walls had been taped inside.  Judy put the straw in the bins and closed them up.

"O Christmas Tea: A British Comedy”, Living Arts Centre, Mississauga, ON

I saw O Christmas Tea: A British Comedy this evening with my pal, Franca, and her friends, Ann and Anne, at the Living Arts Centre. It's the first time I'd been to this theatre and it's nice.

Fans of Monty Python, Mr. Bean, and Dr. Seuss … Grab your teacups! Combining British propriety with an unabashed love for the unexpected, London’s 3-time Impresario Award-winning duo steep an outrageously funny and brilliantly inventive show reminiscent of classic British pantos.

Rich in wordplay, comic physicality, and cleverly crafted interactive elements, O Christmas Tea is uproarious fun, yet it is the duo’s boundless imagination and endearing chemistry that provide the real magic and heart of this play.

It was weird (but in a good way) and silly and funny. Lots of audience participation! It took me a bit to get into as it was different but it was lots of fun. It was funny when one guy's pants split right up the back (not part of the show) and how they handled it.

Me and Franca

Granite Brewery, Toronto, ON

Gord and I had a late lunch this afternoon at the Granite Brewery (Eglinton E/Mount Pleasant) with Craig and Wendy, Alfred and Christine, and Kevin and Rosemary.  Gord, Craig, Alfred and Kevin have been friends for about 60 years!

My Ringberry Ale (raspberry blonde beer) was good!

Gord had Fish and Chips (haddock in the Granite’s own Ringwood ale batter served with fresh cut fries, a side of coleslaw and tartar sauce). It was a big meal! The fish and fries were good.

I had the Chicken Souvlaki Dinner (two marinated charbroiled chicken skewers on a bed of basmati rice with Greek salad, warm pita bread and tzatziki) but without the salad. It was good too.

And here we are!

Judy was our server and she took good care of us.

Elephant & Castle, Toronto, ON

After Gord and I saw Fisherman's Friends: The Musical, we had supper at Elephant & Castle (King Street W/Simcoe Street).  There were lots of tables reserved and a large party in the back so we were happy to get a table.

Gord ordered Baja Fish Tacos (two crispy fried haddock tacos served in grilled flour tortillas with shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, chipotle aioli, cilantro and a side of hot sauce and served with a noble house salad).

I ordered Fried Chicken Tenders (buttermilk brined, hand breaded chicken tenderloins served with plum sauce & golden fried chips).

Both were really good.

Josh was our server.  He was friendly and chatty and took good care of us.

"Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical", Royal Alexandra Theatre, Toronto

Gord and I saw Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical this afternoon at the Royal Alexandra Theatre on King Street W.  It's a Mirvish production.

Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical tells the story of the world’s most unlikely buoy-band!

Based on the true story of the chart-topping Cornish singing sensations and their hit 2019 movie, 'Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical' is a feel-good voyage about friendship, community and music that will give any land-lover a mighty pair of sea legs.

When a group of Cornish fishermen came together to sing the traditional working songs they’d sung for generations, nobody, least of all the fishermen, expected the story to end on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury. They are spotted by a fish-out-of-water music manager on a trip from London, who must learn that there is more to life than selling your sole for fifteen minutes of fame.

So climb aboard, set sail and feel the salty sea air rush through your hair with this brand new musical.

I've seen the movie a couple times ... it's cute and the tunes are good and lively.

The musical is sooooo good! Lots of fabulous toe-tapping singing and dancing! The musicians are very talented ... not only did they play instruments but they also sang and danced.

Book ~ "Shadow" (2007) Ellen Miles

From Goodreads ~ Welcome to the Puppy Place - where every puppy finds a home!

Charles and Lizzie Peterson know a lot about puppies. That's because the Petersons are a foster family for young dogs. Someday they will have a puppy of their own. Until then, they keep busy helping special puppies find homes.

When the Petersons meet Shadow, they know he is very special. He is a cute black Labrador retriever and he is extremely smart. Everyone agrees that Shadow deserves the best. He will be the perfect puppy for someone. But who will be the perfect owner for him?

Charles and his older sister, Lizzie, are in elementary school. They have been bugging their parents to get a dog but their mom is a cat person and has said no. She agrees to let them foster dogs so they can see what it's like having the responsibility of having a dog.

A vet contacts them asks if they would like to foster Shadow, a Labrador retriever puppy, and find a home for him. Charles and Lizzie hope their home will be Shadow's new home. But their parents say no because they are going on vacation in a couple weeks and it's not the right time ... so they have to find a home for Shadow. During show and tell in her class one day, Lizzie gets the inspiration for what would be the best thing for Shadow.

Though this book is a quick read and directed at elementary-aged children, I found it entertaining. There is a learning experience and a puppy tip at the end. It is written in third person perspective and first person from Shadow's point of view. It is the third in the Puppy Place series, which currently has 64 books in the series, and works as a stand alone.
