Carriage Room, Corner Brook, NL

I had breakfast this morning in the Carriage Room, which is on the main floor of the Glynmill Inn.

I had ham and eggs and a large milk.  Another option was fried bologna and eggs but I'm not a fan of fried bologna.  It was good.

Daniel was my server and he took good care of me.

King Henry’s Pub, Corner Brook, NL

I had supper this evening in King Henry's Pub.

It is in the basement of the Glynmill Inn (and it felt like I was in a basement).

There are VLTs (gambling machines) in the restaurant
if you're feeling lucky

I ordered a burger (no lettuce or onions and I swapped the cheddar cheese for mozzarella cheese) and home fries.  It was delicious!  The ground beef is freshly ground and the fries are freshly chopped (not frozen).

Legends Nova Scotia Lounge, Enfield, NS

I was supposed to have a half hour layover in the airport in Halifax before my flight to Deer Lake, NL today.  But we were an hour late leaving Toronto so I missed my connecting flight and had a 2.5 hour wait for the next flight to Deer Lake.

I had lunch at Legends ... it is the only sit down restaurant once you are through Security so there's not a lot of choice.

I ordered a club sandwich (minus the lettuce) with kettle chips.  It was okay.  I'm not a big fan of kettle chips so left most of them.

Melinda was my server and she was fast and friendly.

Boccone Trattoria Veloce, Mississauga, ON

I had an early flight to Halifax this morning and had breakfast at Boccone Trattoria Veloce, my go-to restaurant at the airport, before my flight.

I ordered bacon and eggs along with a large milk.  It was good.

Book ~ "Muddy York: A History of Toronto until 1834" (2015) Richard Fiennes-Clinton

From Goodreads ~ In 1793, John Graves Simcoe established a plot of land along the shores of Lake Ontario as the site for the new capital of Upper Canada, which he named York. This engaging popular history provides a comprehensive overview of the early days of settlement, the devastation of the Battle of York, the emergence of industry and commerce, and introduces eminent families.

Emphasis is placed on the development of a streetscape, the built heritage of the time, and the people who laid the foundation for the emergence of Toronto in 1834. Significant participants are presented in the context of where they lived and worked, and major events in the life of York are introduced through the eyes of the people who witnessed them and the landmarks that shaped the town.

Richard Fiennes-Clinton is the owner of Muddy York Walking Tours.  Since 1997, he has been conducting a variety of tours and introducing visitors and residents to the secrets behind Toronto.  After reading his book, it's obvious he knows his stuff!

I was attracted to this book because  I am interested in the history of Toronto.  I knew some of its history but I learned a lot more.  It's amazing how intertwined the early families of York were as friends and with intermarriage.

This book covers the history of Toronto (aka Muddy York) from prehistoric times to 1834.  The chapters include:
  1. Prehistoric Toronto
  2. Toronto's first people
  3. Algonquian and Iroquoian people
  4. Toronto under the French crown
  5. Colonies in crisis
  6. Founding of the Town of York
  7. A biography of the Simcoes
  8. Early settlement near York
  9. The streets of York
  10. The major events around York - with emphasis on the War of 1812 and the Rebellion of 1837
  11. The buildings around York

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it.  I liked the writing style.  There is a lot of information but I didn't find that it dragged or was boring.  The way that it's written, you can read it from front to back (like I did) or you can turn to specific sections that interest you.

It was interesting to read about the history of the streets of York/Toronto, how they got their names and if they still exist today.  The same goes for the buildings around York.  There was a great amount of background about them and in most cases, a picture of what they used to look like.  It would have been nice to have a map with the buildings plotted and a picture of what the location looks like today since most of the buildings are unfortunately not around.

Monster Jam, Toronto, ON

Gord and I went to Monster Jam tonight at the Rogers Centre.  I've never been to Monster Jam and have been wanting to go.

The Monster Trucks included Northern Nightmare (from Canada), Grave Digger, Scooby Doo, Son-uva Digger, Black Stallion, Hurricane Force, Wrecking Crew, Bounty Hunter, Zombie, Monster Mutt Rottweiler, Dragon, Storm Damage, Higher Education, Rage and Alien Invasion.  And here they come ... and there were really really LOUD :)

The sixteen trucks pulled in and parked.

The first competition was a race around the track and over obstacles ... two trucks went together and eventually the winner was the one with the fastest time.

Fionn MacCool's, Toronto, ON (Front Street W)

After Gord and I saw Creed this afternoon (it was good), we walked to Fionn MacCool's on Front Street W for supper.  My sister had given us a gift certificate in July for our anniversary and we used it.

It was a busy spot and there was a waiting list!

Gord ordered Fish & Chips.  He said it was excellent and he'd get it again.

Roger, a friend and colleague of Gord's, is having a birthday today ... happy birthday, Roger!

Roger and his family were celebrating at the Dragon Pearl (on York Mills Road, west of Don Mills Road) and Roger asked Gord and I to join them.

There is stuff for sale throughout the restaurant

It is a big restaurant and it was a busy spot.

It's a buffet restaurant and there was lots to choose from.  If you are a seafood lover, there is shrimp, oysters, calamari and even lobster (on the weekends).

Toronto Rock 7, Rochester Knighthawks 12

Gord and I are season ticket holders for the Toronto Rock lacrosse team games ... the Rock is a professional lacrosse franchise in the National Lacrosse League (NLL).  This is our fourth year going to the games and our third year having seasons tickets.

Tonight was their first home game of the new season and they hosted the Rochester Knighthawks.

Scotty Newlands was back to sing the national anthems.

The Duke of Devon, Toronto, ON
