A Christmas memory

Around Christmastime when I was about seven, my father took me to Zellers and told me to wait in the toy section until he came back for me (this was in the late 1960s in Dartmouth, NS, when you would still do that).

I got bored after a while and went looking for him.  I found him at the checkout ... and he was paying for an Easy Bake Oven.  Of course, I assumed it was for me.  But no, he said a friend of his had asked him to pick one up for this little girl.

Bummer!

Coincidentally guess what Santa Claus left under our Christmas tree for me that year?!  An Easy Bake Oven!  Yippee!  I was just as lucky as that other little girl!

Whenever my mother would make a cake, I'd bug her to put some batter in my little pan and I'd put it in my oven.

It wasn't until years later that I put the two things together and realized what had really happened.  Duh!

Here's what the Easy Bake Oven looks like now!  It sure has changed!

I wonder if little girls these days are still into them.

Dang - it HAS changed. I remember the year that I got my Easy Bake oven. It was one the best Christmas's ever.

It was my favourite present as a child EVER - and way back then the selection of mixes you could get was incredible -pizza, all kinds of cookies, apple pie - even gum drops - I made my poor mother sit down and eat what I am sure was the most god awful pizza on the planet - mine looked just like the blue one
