Gord and I saw Goon with Seann William Scott, Jay Baruchel and Alison Pill this afternoon.
Labeled an outcast by his brainy family, a bouncer overcomes long odds to lead a team of under performing misfits to semi-pro hockey glory, beating the crap out of everything that stands in his way.
When I saw the preview last week, I thought it looked like a fun movie. The Toronto Star gave it a 3/4 in their review.
It's a funny movie and Seann William Scott plays the part of Doug the Thug well. Doug acknowledges that he's not all that smart and is happy to finally find something that he does well.
Doug plays for the Halifax Highlanders in the Eastern Maritimes Hockey League. At one point, he comes out of a convenience store carrying a box of Fort Garry beer which I thought was strange. First because convenience stores in Halifax can't sell beer and second because Fort Garry beer is a Manitoba beer. At the end, though, we find that the movie was filmed in Winnipeg. Why not just base it in Western Canada rather than Eastern Canada?
John Paul Tremblay, Robb Wells and Mike Smith of the Trailer Park Boys have brief roles.
Though The Toronto Star gave it a more generous review that I would, it is a fun time waster and if you don't mind a lot of fighting and blood, you should check it out.
