Marilyn Monroe was my cousin

I've always been interested in genealogy.

My mother comes from a family of 16 kids (one father/two mothers).

My father died when I was eight and I don't know a lot about his family.

Back in the mid 1990s, one of my mother's brothers had given me a lot of information about our ancestors and I inputted it into a program to keep track of it. Then life happened and I got distracted.

I recently got back into it and signed up to Ancestry.ca on Friday. Very quickly I've been able to track my family (both on my mother and father's side) back to the mid 1660s. Amazing!

I remember my father's sister about ten years ago telling me that we were cousins somehow with Marilyn Monroe through her first husband, James Dougherty. With very little info to go on, I determined this afternoon that she was my first cousin-in-law twice removed. My great grandmother and Marilyn's former father-in-law were sister and brother. Yes, it's a stretch and they'd divorced way before I was born but it was fun to figure it out.

Are you into genealogy?

LOL! That's really cool!

I am not into geneology but that's probably because I'm sort of disconnected from all my families in that as an adoptee, I knew I wasn't biologically related to my family and by the time I met my birth family when I was 18 -- I wasn't super connected to them to feel the pull to want to know abuot my ancestry because I feel like an outcast there too.

I find it interesting to hear about other people's families though!

Other people in my family are - so I have information on people going back 4 or 5 generations. Boring people. The most interesting thing I found was that one of my ancestors died as a child when he fell into a boiling vat of maple syrup when playing hide 'n seek. Marilyn Monroe is way cooler!

Jackpot! That is so fun. I don't know anything about my father's family, and I'm a decendant of hard-core mafia-esque Italians. Nothing too braggy, right? I wish I was into that.

Hey, there's that tv show where stars find out who there famous relatives are--have you seen it?

I love geneology - so does Shel. As soon as we get a computer at home up and running I am certain Shel will get right back into it.

That's cool! Do you have to pay for ancestry.ca? How much info do you need to get started? My mom claims we're realated to the Brothers Grimm, and I'd love to find out.

You can get a free 14 day membership. I'm going to pay for a membership ... it's less than $300 for a year for international access.

That's so fun! I tried going on Ancestry.ca a while ago, but I didn't have much info to put into the system.

Cheers on the famous family ties

How cool! There is a saying that within about 14 generations, everyone on earth is related. I don't know if that's true, but seems plausible.

How fascinating! I haven't done any research on my family, but a few years ago, a cousin on my mother's father's side was researching his family. It was very intriguing, because my maternal grandfather had 12 siblings, so there was a lot of material. Unfortunately, the cousin died before he could finish.

I would love to have the finished research!

How cool is it to be related to Marilyn Monroe. I've always been interested in reading about her and I think she was beautiful. I recently read an article about her in Vanity Fair magazine.

Very cool. I've been meaning to play around with Ancestry.ca and see what it would extrapolate from the old-school digging through archives research my mom did a dozen years ago. The most exciting thing we found at the time was that my childhood best friend was actually a distant cousin. The most disappointing was discovering that there was nothing to back up oral family history claiming we were descended from "an Indian princess" (aka the chief's daughter) Of course trying to trace Native American roots is a bitch, so many name changes and things covered up. Now you've go this on my mind, think I'll call my mom tomorrow....
